I just celebrated my six year “stellaversary” as a Stylist with Stella & Dot. (The pic below is from one of my first Stella & Dot trunk shows in 2008). I couldn’t be happier with where I am in my life right now, and it’s all due to Stella & Dot.

I’ve always loved fashion, but I never thought I’d be in the fashion industry for my career. I just didn’t think I was pretty enough, thin enough, cool enough. I didn’t think I had the gusto and the gumption. Growing up, I dreamed of being a writer, either a columnist for a fashion magazine or a fearless journalist in the field. As I got older and went through college, I realized that writing is not as glamorous as it’s portrayed in the movies – it’s not all Devil Wears Prada. And news writing is, to put it lightly, suffocating, stale and boring. So I found myself trying to dream a different dream.

When I attended a book signing in early 2008, I was 22 years old and about to graduate from college. I wasn’t worried about what my future held for me, I felt rather confident in the fact that I was a capable person and I knew I’d find something. But I didn’t know what that “something” was.

At the book signing, I commented on a woman’s enamel cuff. She told me it was from a brand new company called Stella & Dot, and gave me a catalog (fun fact: it was called “Luxe Jewels by Stella & Dot” way back then). I was immediately smitten. I fell in love with the jewelry, the design and the aesthetic. I loved what the brand stood for. And I was impressed with their business model and their sales commission. But even more than that – even at 22 years old – I saw a company that would be HUGE. I saw the vision. I felt it. And I admired CEO Jessica Herrin’s transparency and steadfastness.

From there, I’ve never looked back. I’ve questioned my decision on occasion, as we are human and we run into roadblocks even in the greatest of times and circumstances. But my choice to jump in and become a Stella & Dot Stylist is something I will forever thank myself for.

I encourage you — yes, YOU! — to think how Stella & Dot may affect and impact your life. Whether you love the jewelry, or the vision, or the community of sisterhood, this is for you. Giving Back: Girls Inc. Career Day

Our Stella & Dot Foundation partner Girls Inc. was created to deliver life-changing programs that inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold. Helping them uncover their passions, Girls Inc. strives to connect teens with role models and introduce them to potential career paths. Last week, we were so fortunate to have 15 girls visit our NY Design Office for a career day! We spent our time touring the office and hosting speed mentoring sessions in Design, Merchandising, Product Development, Quality Control and Public Relations.

At the end of the day, when our Girls Inc. group leader asked if anyone was interested in a career in jewelry, many hands raised in the air, which was such a special moment! Other highlights included a peek in the model maker’s room, learning about the jewelry design process and of course taking home their very own Foundation Bracelet from Stella & Dot. The girls were THRILLED to learn that a portion of the proceeds from the bracelet go to Girls Inc!

What is Vermeil, Anyway?

Stella & Dot uses a lot of vermeil within its jewelry line, and many of you ask me, What is it? Vermeil is a process by which jewelry is created that provides the look of 14kt gold without the expensive price tage. Vermeil (pronounced vur-may) is produced by coating sterling silver with carat gold. A base metal is never used. Sometimes referred to as gilded silver, vermeil is made using the process of electrolysis — electricity and an acid bath — to attach the gold to sterling. To be considered vermeil, the gold must also be at least 10-carat and be at least 1.5 micrometers thick. This layer of gold is thicker than that applied using the electroplating process and will outwear much better and longer than a gold plated item.

What is 14kt Gold-filled?

Gold-filled jewelry has a thick surface layer of 14kt gold. There is 100 times more gold in 14kt gold filled (rolled gold) than in gold plate. This jewelry is created by taking a sheet of 14kt gold and bonding it through extreme heat and pressure to a core of metal alloy (usually a brass). This is a very sophisticated process and only a few mills in the world do it. The quantity of gold must be at least 1/20th of the weight of the total product, which is why it is called a 14/20 Gold Filled piece and is considered a lifetime piece of jewelry. The end result is a piece of jewelry that is resistant to tarnish because of its thick 14kt gold covering.

Care is easy. Just care for it as you would any other jewelry. It is quite durable. A simple inexpensive way to clean rolled gold jewelry is to soak it for a minute or two in a mild liquid jewelry cleaner. Rinse the jewelry thoroughly with water afterwards and let dry.

What is Vermeil?

It is a term that describes a coating of gold on sterling silver. Have you ever heard of gilded silver? That’s vermeil. We use the process of electrolysis to attach 18-24kt gold to sterling silver. Electrolysis is also called electroplating or just “plating” for short. This process will stand up to normal wear. Gold-filled and vermeil products are a great, quality alternative to the much more expensive solid karat gold. Vermeil is a bit more delicate than gold-filled, but comparing them is a bit apples to oranges. Both are high in quality, but vermeil is often a bit more yellow in color due to the higher karat commonly used. Vermeil is a process used to turn charms and cast pieces into a gold tone since they can be made in sterling silver and then dipped in gold.

Everyone loves to showcase their favorite sports team, zodiac sign and initials, and this

Mellow Yellow is Fun for Spring

Yellow is popping up all over the fashion scene for spring… And I’ve got to honest, I’m kinda liking it! I’ve never been a huge fan of the canary color, but it’s been putting a smile on my face lately. The bright hue comes in shiny patents and enamels, and are splashed across swingy tops and sprinkled into button-up shirts. I’ve come to realize, really, what’s not to love about yellow?

Endless.com has the cutest (I do mean the CUTEST) pair of sandals I’ve seen this season (at right).
